The road to last week’s historic conviction of three staff from Anglo Irish Bank started in the late 1990s when the Revenue Commissioners were looking into every financial institution in the country for Dirt tax evasion.
Anglo cooperated with the investigation and was found to have no liability. But that conclusion was called into doubt during a subsequent tax amnesty for bogus non-resident account holders which revealed some of Anglo’s customers had avoided Dirt....
