Ask a Kerryman how they think the county’s Gaelic football team will fare in Croke Park in September and you will get a downbeat answer.

“Yerra, sure we’ll travel up anyway and if nothing else, sure can’t we do a bit of shopping while we’re up above in Dublin.”

The management of Kerry Foods have long taken a similarly downbeat approach to singing their own praises. They might be bringing in revenues of over €6 billion, with trading profit up more than 7 per cent to €750 million last year, but Kerry executives do not make a habit of getting over excited when telling you about it: “Yerra, we’re doing ok out beyond in Asia and sure while we’re there we might buy up a few companies.”
