Nearly nine months after it left the European Union, the UK is strangling itself in the ever-decreasing circles of Brexit. The union is under unprecedented strain in Scotland and Northern Ireland as truculent English nationalism untethers the assumptions that held it together for a century. Trust between London and its partners in Dublin and elsewhere has eroded. The British appear isolated in Europe, politically and diplomatically, in ways we have not witnessed before.
