When they closed their doors in March 2020 as the country braced for the full impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ireland’s publicans could hardly have imagined the full extent of the disruption and hardship they would have to endure.

Back then, the worst case scenario many of them envisaged was losing out on trade over St Patrick’s Day and Easter. To have also missed out on summer, Christmas, another St Patrick’s Day and another...
