Sinn Féin likely to approve a reformed Special Criminal Court

The party’s new justice spokesman Pa Daly says it is waiting for the outcome of the independent review before taking an official position on it

Sinn Féin’s stance on the Special Criminal Court has come under further scrutiny in recent months

Sinn Féin is preparing to shift its stance on the Special Criminal Court following the publication of an independent review of its operation.

The emergency legislation which set up the three-judge, non-jury Special Criminal Court to try cases involving terrorism and serious gangland crime offences has to be renewed in a Dáil vote next month.

Sinn Féin, which was once an ardent opponent of the court, has abstained from the vote for the past two years. But party sources have told the Business Post that it could support it for the first time if sufficient reforms are contained in a soon-to-be published independent review.
