Private retailers in the food sector “have to step up to the plate” when it comes to combatting grocery inflation, the retail minister has said.

Neale Richmond, a minister of state at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, has called for a meeting of the Retail Forum to discuss concerns over high food prices on Wednesday.

It comes as high grocery bills continue to squeeze consumers’ wallets despite a slowdown in inflation.

Last month, Malachy O’Connor, a partner at IPLC, a European grocery industry consulting firm, told the Business Post that it is unlikely that there will be a fall in food prices in the near future.
