The announcement of a deal on the new consultants’ contract could not have come at a better time for Stephen Donnelly, the Minister for Health.

It is just two weeks out from the cabinet reshuffle, so to be able to finally reach agreement on the new contract after two-and-a-half years of negotiations is a considerable coup for him.
