- The number of students graduating with first class honours from Institutes of Technology has doubled in the last fifteen years, new figures show.

- Child benefit may no longer automatically be paid to mothers rather than fathers under new legislation being considered by Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar.

- Special needs children are to receive supports to allow them to benefit from the free pre-school year for the first time.
