Germany's automotive watchdog has ordered Volkswagen to recall 2.4 million cars in Germany as a result of the diesel emissions scandal.

It is understood the watchdog rejected the car manufacturer's proposal that motorists could voluntarily bring their cars in for repair.

The order comes as Italian police raided VW offices in Verona and Lamborghini offices in Bologna.
