Patricia King’s trade union career was born out of a period of intense conflict, and the signs suggest that is where it is headed once again. For almost two years since taking over from David Begg as general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) she has worked quietly, building consensus and a new role for the organisation in post-crash, post-social-partnership Ireland.
