It was the discovery of the Garda tapes into the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier that finally set off alarm bells among Garda management.

Ian Bailey, the self-confessed prime suspect for the killing of the Frenchwoman in west Cork in December 1996, was seeking to gather all evidence about the Garda investigation.

It turned out that all public calls to Bandon Garda station – the nerve centre of the murder investigation – were being recorded....
