Shannon-Dublin water project must be delivered, say engineers

Campaigners against the project have argued that Dublin’s supply problem could be addressed by fixing the leaks in the capital’s water system, but Engineers Ireland's latest infrastructure report backs the plan

Engineers Ireland’s latest State of Ireland report on the country’s infrastructure says the water and flood prevention systems are “inadequately maintained, unable to meet peak demand and requiring significant investment”.

The organisation’s director general Caroline Spillane said severe water shortages faced recently by people across the Dublin, eastern and midlands regions would get much worse if key water supply projects for these areas were not delivered.
