Counting one’s chickens before they are hatched is especially dangerous in politics – just ask the Republican Party after the midterm elections in the US.

Pollsters and commentators harboured no doubts about the outcome. The results would follow the pattern established over a half-century, except more so. The candidates of the incumbent president’s party would take a hit and, in this case, because of inflation and rising prices, the losses would be greater than usual.
