Harold Wilson used to boast to Jack Lynch that he had the support of more Irish voters in Huyton than Lynch had in his own constituency in Cork. At the same time, Wilson announced that the Labour Party had become “the natural party of government” in Britain. In respect of this latter claim, Lynch could easily trump it.
