Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Ireland prompted a flurry of emails among officials about whether to use state china and crystal for a €14,000 dinner in his honour.

He was welcomed to Ireland last July by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in a visit that was widely noted for the budding ‘bromance’ between the two photogenic heads of government who met again in Canada last month.
