A new plan is being drawn up to turn off the lights on the country’s motorway network in early mornings to cut costs.

There are currently more than 18,000 individual lights mounted on columns on the country’s motorways and national routes.

But the state is required under EU law to improve the energy efficiency of public lighting on the road network by 33 per cent over the next five years.
