Barristers and solicitors handling criminal legal aid cases bankrolled by the state made a combined €49 million last year, according to Department of Justice figures.

Cahir O’Higgins tops the list with earnings of €464,865 followed by Michael Staines, the solicitor of former Anglo boss David Drumm, whose office earned €451,011.
