Landlord mortgage interest relief cost state over €4bn

Allowing landlords to deduct mortgage interest as an expense against rental income has cost the state more than €4 billion since 2008, according to new figures from the Department of Finance.

However, the Department of Finance figures show that the total expenditure on interest relief for landlords has dropped dramatically in recent years, after the amount of mortgage interest relief granted was restricted in 2009.

Since then, landlords can offset only 75 per cent of the mortgage...
