Gardaí took average of 12 days’ sick leave
Gardaí were on sick leave for an average of 12 days each last year, according to new figures.
Around 157,000 garda days were lost last year in the 12,800-strong force, at a salary cost alone of €11 million.
The Garda Inspectorate has calculated that every one-day reduction in the average annual sick leave by all gardaí is the equivalent of putting an extra 70 gardaí on the beat.
