From the archive: How the Serbs targeted Goražde as Bosnia’s endgame began

When Serbian rebel forces in Bosnia did what all prayed they would not and few thought they would dare, overrunning a UN-designated, ill-defined ‘safe area’, the lightning advance stunned the beleaguered UN Protection Force (Unprofor). The Bosnian Serbs stormed into the overcrowded town centre of Srebrenica, forcing the enclave’s 42,000 Muslim inhabitants to flee. On Friday, the same fate faced the inhabitants of Žepa.
