Editorial: Last week’s climate deal is an encouraging first step on the road to sustainability

The decisions reached won’t please everyone, but it is important to have a defined pathway to follow, rather than endless haggling over figures

The publication of the government’s targets to reduce emissions across the economy has divided opinion. Farmers believe that the 25 per cent emissions reduction target for agriculture will ruin their livelihoods. Environmentalists believe that the failure to put in a higher 30 per cent target for the agricultural sector is a sop to rural Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael backbenchers, and the country’s powerful farming organisations.
