Editorial: Irish and British must prioritise reform of North’s political institutions

The principle of cross-community representation must be safeguarded in any talks on reshaping the system

It is almost 25 years since the Good Friday Agreement was signed, and while the peace process has undoubtedly been a success, the political institutions that underpin it have been less so.

For over a third of the existence of power sharing, Northern Ireland has been without a functioning devolved government. Even if you are a glass-half-full kind of person, that’s an undeniable level of dysfunction for a modern democracy.
