Editorial: EU must tread carefully if it turns off Poland and Hungary’s funding tap

Only by being seen to be open and fair can the EU demonstrate to recalcitrant member states that their complaints about European overreach have no basis in fact

The European Union’s regional and development spending is a good example of “levelling up”. Each year, Brussels sends tens of billions of euro to poorer member states to help modernise their infrastructure, education and health systems, among other things, and to enable them to catch up with richer members. Ireland has been a beneficiary of this funding in past decades.
