The world’s internet and technology companies have been on a hiring spree almost since the day Silicon Valley was established. As they grew from start-ups to globe-spanning giants, tech companies took on the best graduates from the best universities, sought the most technically gifted, or hired the armies of content moderators required when social media became a free-for-all. Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, employed 45,000 people in 2018; today it has 85,000.
