Community ownership plan for wind farms

Bord na Móna is eyeing a radical new plan to enhance the public acceptability of wind farms by offering communities the chance to cash in on an ownership stake in the power plants.

The semi-state this month announced ambitious plans to spend hundreds of millions of euro on wind power, but has faced substantial local opposition to its plans, especially in the midlands.

The new plan would see communities offered the chance to control an equity stake in a wind farm, with Bord na Móna potentially guaranteeing a loan advanced to the community to fund the venture.
