Cigarette smugglers ‘duping’ SMEs

Warning contained in ministerial briefing drawn up by Revenue Commissioners

Organised criminal gangs are ‘duping’ cash-strapped small businesses into smuggling cigarettes for them, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has been told.

The warning is contained in a ministerial briefing drawn up for Fitzgerald by the Revenue Commissioners and obtained by The Sunday Business Post.

According to the briefing, Revenue investigations have uncovered “new and sophisticated importation methods” including “legitimate companies (possibly in financial difficulty) being approached by OCGs [Organised Criminal Gangs] to arrange...
