Christmas shopping start 'concerning' for retailers

Black Friday and sterling fall combine to deliver December drops

An early update from the retail sector has given worrying indications for retailers hoping for the usual Christmas shopping boost.

The report from Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), which represents 1,600 companies in the sector, says sales are currently lower compared with the same time last year. Its trading statement covers the period from December 1 to December 16.
