Americans are fed up. Increasingly, they seem to be eschewing the innate optimism I’ve always considered central to the American psyche. Cynics would say it’s an optimism based on delusion, but so what? As those motivational car bumper stickers that make me want to rear-end their owners say: ‘Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.’
