Skellig Michael prepares for Star Wars pilgrims Unesco site to make more space for sci-fi fans

The state plans to increase visitor access to Skellig Michael after after increased international exposure

The latest Star Wars film opens in December

The access to Skellig Michael, a monastic site off the coast of Kerry, has traditionally been limited due to weather conditions and the need to conserve it. It was chosen by Irish monks over 1,000 years ago because of its remoteness and inaccessibility.

But demand is set to increase even more following the release later this year of the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, which was partly filmed on Skellig Michael.
