Thirty years ago, on April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the ChernobylNuclear Power Plant malfunctioned and exploded during a routine test.

The blast threw radioactive smoke, dust, and debris into the atmosphere, where it traveled as far as Norway. It was the world’s largestnuclear accident, releasing 10 times more radiation than the catastrophic meltdown of reactors in Fukushima prefecture, Japan, in the wake of an earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
