Applications to insolvency body up almost 30 per cent

Figures come as 800 freed from bankruptcy under new rules

The Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI), the independent body set up to help deal with personal debt problems, has welcomed a new Government scheme aimed at giving free advice to home-owners struggling to pay their mortgage.

The State-funded Scheme of Aid and Advice for Borrowers in Home Mortgage Arrears will enable borrowers with mortgage arrears to meet a Personal Insolvency Practitioner (PIP) for advice.PIPs are professional debt advisors regulated by the ISI.

ISI director Lorcan O'Connor said the new scheme should ensure thatanyone in difficulty can now get the help they need.
