MSD to cut 280 jobs in Wicklow
Pharmaceutical company MSD is to cease operations at its facility in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, by the end of 2015 with the loss of 280 jobs.
Staff at the plant, which makes ingredients for respiratory care, infectious disease and cardiovascular medicines, were called to a meeting to discuss the decision this morning.
Manufacturing activities will be phased out in 2014 but staff reductions will not happen until the end of 2014. The move is part of an ongoing review of MSD’s worldwide manufacturing capabilities.
MSD said it will now enter into consultation with employees and their representatives and that it s committed to dealing with all affected employees with “dignity and respect.” It said it will provide appropriate support between now and the cessation of manufacturing activities at the site.
The company’s other Irish sites in Dublin, Cork, Carlow and Tipperary, which employ 2,000 people, are not affected by today’s announcement.
